Indigo Bakery is a small-batch, scratch bakery at 701 Front Street in historic downtown Georgetown, SC, and it’s one of my family’s favorite stops. Cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, brownies and pastries, all made right there. Come and get a sneak peek of the process through the observation window.

“My normal is the brownies or the pistachio white chocolate cookies. This time I went with something new.”

Indigo Bakery

Indigo is a fitting name in Georgetown. In colonial days indigo was a prosperous crop here, and local planters formed the Winyah Indigo Society, chartered by King George III in 1757. The society opened a school that set aside places for children who couldn’t afford tuition, and its brick hall, built in 1857, still stands downtown.

What is a kouign-amann?

It’s a pastry from Brittany, France, and you say it “queen ah-MAHN.” Buttery, layered dough, baked until it’s flaky with caramelized edges. Indigo’s had a cream cheese based filling. It was delicious.

What should you order at Indigo Bakery?

In our family it’s the brownies or the pistachio white chocolate cookies. Those are the regulars. If something new is in the case, try it. That’s how I found the kouign-amann.
