Historic Homes for Sale
Built before 1920, built to last
Every home on this page was built before 1920 and is for sale in the Coastal Carolinas MLS, from Georgetown and Kingstree to Conway, Marion and beyond. The list updates on its own as homes come on and off the market.
Old homes have a charm new construction can’t copy: deep porches, tall windows, high ceilings and heart pine floors worn smooth by a hundred years of footsteps. In many ways they were also built better than homes are today.
- Old-growth heart pine. Framing and floors were cut from slow-grown longleaf pine, denser and more rot-resistant than the fast-grown lumber used now.
- Full-size lumber. A 2×4 really measured two inches by four.
- Plaster walls. Plaster over wood lath is harder, quieter and more fire-resistant than drywall.
- Built for the climate. Raised on piers, with tall ceilings, big windows and cross breezes, these homes were designed to stay cool long before air conditioning.
- Built by hand. Joinery, trim and millwork were fitted on site by craftsmen, one house at a time.
